Estado Mayor Central

Overview (BLUF)

The Estado Mayor Central (EMC) is the larger of the two main FARC dissident factions in Colombia, led by Alias “Iván Mordisco” (real name: Néstor Gregorio Vera Fernández). The EMC claims formal continuity with the historic FARC-EP military command structure and is the primary armed actor that rejected the 2016 peace agreement and continued operations — most mid-level commanders who refused demobilisation aligned with the EMC rather than with the Segunda Marquetalia (which retained more senior leadership).

The EMC is the largest active guerrilla force in Colombia, with an estimated 3,000–5,000 fighters operating across at least 20 departments, with particular strength in Caquetá, Meta, Guaviare, Putumayo, Chocó, and Nariño. It is the primary beneficiary of the territorial vacuum left by FARC-EP demobilisation. The EMC formally broke off negotiations with the Petro government in 2024 following a government declaration of offensive operations.
