Al Jazeera

Al Jazeera Media Network is a Qatar state-funded international news organisation headquartered in Doha. Launched in 1996, it operates Arabic-language (Al Jazeera Arabic) and English-language (Al Jazeera English) television channels alongside a major digital operation. It is the most widely watched Arabic-language news channel globally and one of the primary sources of independent ground-truth reporting from conflict zones in the Middle East and North Africa.

Relevance to Gaza Conflict

Al Jazeera has suffered the highest staff casualty rate of any single news organisation in the Gaza War (October 2023–present). As of April 2026, CPJ documents at least 10–11 Al Jazeera staff journalists killed, consistent with the Gaza Journalists — Targeting of Press investigation’s “tiered targeting” finding (global-reach outlets targeted first due to narrative reach).

The Israeli government moved to ban Al Jazeera operations in Israel in May 2024, citing alleged incitement. Israeli authorities raided the network’s Jerusalem bureau and seized equipment. The CPJ, RSF, and international press-freedom organisations condemned the closure as an attack on press freedom.
