Javier Milei

Executive Profile (BLUF)

Javier Gerardo Milei (b. 1970) is the President of Argentina (inaugurated December 2023), an economist and former television personality who rode a wave of hyperinflationary collapse and institutional discrediting to win the presidency under the La Libertad Avanza (LLA) coalition. Milei’s presidency is the most radical right-libertarian government in Argentine history: he implemented a brutal fiscal shock (eliminating the primary deficit within months via spending cuts exceeding 30% in real terms), closed approximately half of all ministries, and dollarized adjacent to a formal peg through parallel-market convergence. Internationally, Milei is a vocal supporter of Israel, a critic of China and Brazil (initially), and has sought close alignment with United States under both Biden and Trump administrations. His economic experiment — “La Motosierra” (The Chainsaw) — is the most closely watched fiscal adjustment in the developing world.
