JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin)
Executive Profile (BLUF)
JNIM (Group for Support of Islam and Muslims) is the preeminent Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadist coalition operating across the central Sahel — Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Côte d’Ivoire’s northern border zones. Formed in March 2017 as a merger of four Sahel-based Al-Qaeda franchises (Ansar Dine, al-Mourabitoun, AQIM’s Saharan Emirate, and the Macina Liberation Front/Katibat Macina), JNIM is led by Iyad Ag Ghaly (a Tuareg leader from Kidal, Mali) under overall AQIM authority. JNIM’s operational model combines spectacular attacks on military targets, siege of regional capitals (Kidal, Mopti), governance provision in ungoverned rural zones, and systematic targeting of security forces — a strategy that has accelerated the collapse of French-Sahelian partnerships and destabilized multiple government. The withdrawal of French forces (Barkhane/Takuba) following military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger has created an operational windfall for JNIM, which has expanded territory significantly since 2022.
